SKINHEADS

National Day

Skinheads celebrate Sweden's National Day in a suburb north of Stockholm in 1997.

My first encounter with skinheads was pure coincidence on a ferry between Stockholm and Åland in 1995. The small group of skinheads aroused my curiosity, as the subculture was much talked about and featured in newspaper headlines.

They told me about the skinhead culture and their lives. When we returned to Stockholm, they introduced me to other skinheads. Once I got to know them, I started bringing my camera.

This was the start of several years of photo documentation, which resulted in a series of exhibitions, the first of which took place at Kulturhuset Stockholm.
